House of Akoma University is proud to be a Washington State Department of Health–Approved Doula Training Program.
This means our courses meet the state’s official standards for certification and Medicaid reimbursement. In real terms, that means folks who complete our training are eligible to become licensed doulas in Washington—and can get paid to support families through Medicaid. That’s a big deal, especially for Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities who’ve often been left out of these systems.
One of our core goals is to increase doula support for us, by us. When we are supported by people who understand our traditions, our culture, and our lived experiences, we see better outcomes. Period.
This approval adds real value for our students and the families they serve. It helps doulas step into this sacred work with confidence, skill, and a billable trade. And it helps birthing families get the care they deserve—often at no cost to them. At House of Akoma University, we’re training doulas who are rooted in culture, tradition, and healing—and now, with this state approval, we’re also building real pathways toward sustainability and impact!
